Commemorated on First Sunday of July
Notre-Dame-Trouvée, Lavoûte-Chilhac, Haute-Loire, Auvergne, France
Our Lady the Found is said to be the "world's smallest Virgin." On July 8, 1496, two little girls were playing on the banks of the Allier, striking stones one against the other to make sparks. Suddenly, just as a flint was scratched, a half-inch statuette fell from it, depicting a woman with a child in her left arm. Word spread and people began coming to see the Virgin-shaped object. The monastery prior and the bishop of Saint-Flour conducted an inquiry which concluded that the children were sincere. The feast day is the first Sunday in July. (Picture from www.coldev.org.)
