Madonna di Paitone (Paitone, Brescia, Italy)

Commemorated on August 15
Madonna di Paitone (Paitone, Brescia, Italy) The shrine of the Madonna of Paitone is a church of Paitone , in the province of Brescia . Built from 1534 on the site where the Virgin Mary was miraculously appeared two years ago, it has been repeatedly embellished over the centuries but retained its role as a devotional shrine to the Virgin. Contains an important altarpiece by Moretto , l ' Apparition of Our Lady to the deaf-mute Filippo Viotti , has always been praised for the fact of illustrating the appearance with great pragmatism, without resorting to a supernatural and miraculous.

The birth of the sanctuary is linked to the apparition of Our Lady to the young Filippo Viotti, which occurred in August 1532 , in the mountains near the town [1] . The Virgin would ask the child to build a church at that point and these, deaf and dumb , then it would be miraculously healed. The community of Paitone, in honor of the Blessed Virgin's request, decides to build a new shrine dedicated to her. The authorization from the diocese of Brescia arrives on May 11, 1534 , prepared by Mattia Ugoni, auxiliary bishop Andrea Corner [1] . Among other things, it says precisely that "received the humble and devoted your question, have just presented to us, to found, to erect, construct and build a church [...] in the place where the Blessed Virgin appeared Maria and where he is said to work many miracles, we with the tenor of this letter, we grant such license and faculty "

L ' Apparition of Our Lady to the deaf-mute Filippo Viotti is a painting in oil on canvas (226x177 cm) of Moretto , dating back to 1534 and some kept in the shrine of the Madonna of Paitone in Paitone , in the province of Brescia .
The painting is part of the artistic maturity of Moretto and constitutes an episode quite separate from its style of this period, performed in reproducing as faithfully as possible the story of a young deaf-mute Filippo Viotti, who in August 1532 appeared the Madonna and was miraculously healed. The painting is characterized by the flowing robe of the Virgin, of exquisite artistic rendering, and the extreme concreteness of figuration, where the sacred is fully translated into reality and there is not any miraculous element

The painting is mentioned for the first time by Carlo Ridolfi in 1648 , who writes that "in the church placed in the top of the mountain Paitone ammirasi still a miraculous image of the Virgin that made Moretto to petition the City for such a miracle occurred" [ 2] . The researcher adds a long story, very emphasized [3] , the miracle happened and how the painter set about performing the job: "He collected a peasant (Filippo Viotti) more wild in the bosom of the mountain, which appeared to Mary in semblance of serious Matrona, surrounded by white robe, commettendogli, that did mean to que 'Peoples, to which her name edificassero a church in the summit, which thus cessarebbe certain injury wrong, that oppressed him (he was deaf-mute ) . He obeyed the lad, et also got health: Built the temple, was ordered the painting to Moretto, who with each application in field you gave to make up the figure of the Virgin, so that in referring the Rustico (ie trying to follow description given by the farmer), but laboring in vain, he thought that some of his great sin gl'impedisse effect, so very divotione reconciled with God, took Holy Eucharistia, and then resumed the work, and was made in the Imagine all likewise to what haveva saw Farmer, who painted in 'standing, with the basket of blackberries in the arm, so he is visited by frequent visits of' Peoples, by which they get from the Divine hand gratie and favors " [2] .
The miraculous apparition, which took place in August 1532 [3] , thus leads to the birth of the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Paitone : the construction was authorized on 11 May 1534 by Mattia Ugoni, auxiliary bishop of Brescia Francesco Corner [3] . This Ugoni Mattia had already had dealings with the Moretto: in 1520 , in fact, the painter had obtained from the City of Brescia the contract for construction of the processional banner of the Brotherhood of the Holy Crosses thanks to this character [4] . It is not unlikely, therefore, that even in this case was the Ugoni to suggest the name of Moretto to the community of Paitone [3] .
The painting remains in its original location, where it is praised by all the ancient art literature [3] , until 1915 when, to repair the damage during the First World War , it is removed and transported to Rome by the Ministry of Education [3] . After the war in 1918 , however, the community demands it back promptly. The work is then put back in place on the ' altar , where he remains today [3] .
