On September 13, 1692, a terrible earthquake shook the city of Salta. The statue of the Immaculate Virgin fell from its niche over the main altar to the floor undamaged, in a position that seemed to convey blessing to city. The people decided to take the image in procession, along with the statue of Christ from the same church. Immediately the temblors ceased, and the city returned to life. Shortly thereafter the Council resolved to name the Virgin of the Miracle Salta's patron and to commemorate the date annually. The fiesta draws an enormous multitude from the whole province.
