La Dama Bianca (The White Lady), Messina, Italy

Commemorated on August 9
La Dama Bianca (The White Lady), Messina, Italy
Messina I have always had a special devotion to Our Lady.

During the Sicilian Vespers, which saw the protagonists particularly Messina, Messina was under the 'siege of the French commanded by Viceroy Charles D' Anjou, who was certain that the city in the grip of hunger and famine were to capitulate at any moment ' another. But with the passage of time, seeing that the city stoically resisted, he decided to go to the manor decidedly strong. On 6 August 1282, the French attempted to storm the fortress of St. Saviour but the young gallant charge of the defense of the walls heroically repulsed the 'attack causing heavy casualties among the French soldiers. The people of Messina knew that the enemy was stronger and better organized, then in addition to the forces of their weapons relied mostly to prayer, asking for help to the Blessed Virgin (still in the prayers of Messina often used the phrase "OH LETTER OF THE QUEEN MOTHER MESSINA SAVE, SAVE MESSINA ").

The 'August 8 unleashed a violent storm of Messina, water and hail fell as they could, the men and women fled their homes, leaving the walls of the city defenseless, the enemy took advantage of immediately approaching the hill capperina unleashing a devastating attack. The commander of troops Messina, Alaimo Leontini, realizing the danger in time, sounded the alarm at the cost of many victims the danger was gone. But the people of Messina were now to the strong force, since the victims were numerous and food was scarce. The French knew very well that night and ritentarono the attack, but there were two women to watch Dina and Clarenza (whose statues are reproduced in movement in the bell tower of the cathedral) and Dina while throwing stones against the French army, was Clarenza in the city to ring the bells as a sign of alarm.

The battle was tough but the people of Messina were not alone to fight, during the fight he appeared a majestic white lady of which the French could not bear the look, was seen at key points in the battle to hang on the walls of white veils that became resistant , and departed unseen archers arrows hitting the troops of Charles D 'Anjou seized with fear that they beat a retreat. That mysterious white lady who threw darts and defended the walls with white veils, was none other than Madonna, who invoked she ran to the aid of his people. La Dama Bianca made his second appearance on 21 November 1301, again defended the walls of Messina, and could be seen by everyone because it was broad daylight, a French soldier hurled against you an arrow but the dart came back hitting him in the eye.

After this new appearance frightened the French, took off the 'siege and left the city. The hill of capperina has always been a sacred place for the people of Messina.

One night a humble monk named Nicholas, the dream that Madonna told him to go the next day by the Senate of Messina, and notify them that Our Lady wanted a temple on the hill, dedicated to her by the name of SANTA MARIA HIGH . The brother the next morning, he thought it was all a figment of his imagination, and not believing that the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, you could turn to a poor friar unknown thought no more. The next night, the Virgin appeared in a dream to between 'Nicholas, scolding him for disobedience. The monk then asked her how miserable he could be heard by the Senate. Our Lady told him not to despair, and the next day at noon a white dove on the hill would have outlined the site and the area where the church was to be built.

So it was, at 12 am of the day June 12, 1294, the hill was swarming with people and notables of Messina, had the appearance of a white dove which delimited the air (which is represented with this story moving statues in the bell tower of the cathedral). Fra 'Nicola then went to the nearby castle Matagrifone to find the queen Constance which set forth the facts, there was this one lady of the court which teasing the monk advised the queen to cast him away. All' sudden the evil courtesan was taken by paralysis of the arm, and from excruciating pains all over my body. The brother advised her to ask for forgiveness to Our Lady, she obeyed and the pain went away. Queen Constance, was shocked from happening, he promised his help, in fact it was she who laid the first stone in 1295, the church was already raised.

In 1300 a new prodigious fact was added to the other making it even more the sanctuary a place of pilgrimage. In fact, he came to 'age in the port of Messina a ship coming from' the East, among other things brought on board a picture of the Madonna object of worship by the sailors of the ship. The master of the ship wanting to donate the painting to the people of Messina decided to donate it to the bishop of Messina so that it was exposed in the cathedral. Framework at a time when he was about to be transported to the cathedral became heavy, the bishop sensing that the will of the Virgin were others decided to leave him on the ship. happened, however, that one evening, while a sailor prayed before the picture he saw in a vision the White Lady, who told him to tell the bishop that he wished that the painting was transported to the church dedicated to her. way it happened that the framework (again become light) was carried in solemn procession, with all the people and the city authorities present in the SHRINE OF SANTA MARIA HIGH.

The Sanctuary among his devotees who knelt in front of it, in addition to Queen Constance, King Ferdinand, Queen Maria Cristina of Savoy, King Vittorio Emanuele and Pope John Paul II. And it is still a place of worship for the people of Messina and fundamental destination of many pilgrimages.
