Our Lady of Assiut, Egypt
Commemorated on August 17
History
The phenomenon occurs in a Coptic church in the center of the Old City. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of people pray, sing and dance around the church.
These appearances are produced in the heart of an Islamic country (and specifically in the case of Assiut, one of the main centers of Islamic fundamentalism) but also one of the Christian centers of Egypt, with a quarter of population Coptic and hundreds of mosques.
Skeptics say that the appearances are quite appropriate. From the slaughter of 58 foreigners in 1997 in the popular tourist site in Luxor, Egypt has struggled with the external perception of its religious tolerance.
Assiut, among other cities along the Nile, was closed to the outside world for security reasons. The government has launched an ambitious 3-year plan to renovate the places where Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus is said to have been in exile, hoping to promote religious tourism.
Coptic Christians, who make up 6 million cristianasen Egypt believe that the Holy Family stopped in Assiut on their way back to Palestine.
As with appearances in Zeitun (1968-1971) have been associated with a great spiritual rebirth, conversion of sinners and countless miracles of healing.
Assiut is the largest city in Upper Egypt and is located about 234 kilometers south of Cairo. It is an ancient city which was established in Pharaonic times.
THE PHENOMENON
The August 17, 2000, the Blessed Virgin Mary began her appearances in the Church of San Marcos in Assiut, Upper Egypt, accompanied by glorious and great, bright lights and doves.
Those who have witnessed the supernatural occurrences have reported seeing bright lights and blue-green lights flashing in the church (without any light source that explains it). Many residents and pilgrims also have to have seen the Virgin Mary in full figure.
They also say they have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary, with outstretched hands and a light emanating from them, and with a blue mantle, accompanied by a smell of incense and the flight of large numbers of white doves of exceptional size in an unexplained flashing bright light. Some say they have seen large birds like a duck.
Since the first appearance on 17 August in the sky around the dome of the church of San Marcos, locals and visitors have been relegated to the neighborhood, waiting in the streets and on rooftops by a vision of Mary.
Thousands of Egyptians have come to this city to stand outside the church to watch the sky and wait for the appearance. Hopeful pilgrims each night singing "Come Mary, Come" or "Your light is on the Cross", hoping pleading to the Virgin Mary that appears between the two towers of the church, as it has done on previous nights.
The appearances are produced in the early morning between three and six o'clock.
WITNESS THE COLOMBIAN SISTER MARGARITA MARTIN PUANTAS
To the glory of God I witnessed during my visit to Assiut. Saw the emergence of light rays on the Church of San Marcos. This occurred on October 28, 2000. We went near the church and I could see that night the flashing light, covering the church towers and domes. The lights came from a place that could not be defined, are heavenly lights, divine nature, not human nature. I was very impressed by the faith of the people, their reactions, hymns and songs. It was like the apostles gathered around the Blessed Virgin on the day of Pentecost. You could see the joy and excitement on their faces as they witnessed these heavenly light rays. God reveals himself to his people as a visible light, symbolizing your love for us.
For over three years, was a source of much bad news or comments. Now is the time to be a source of a cheerful, happy and blessed history. Let's start the story.
Some of you may remember that my first article 3 years ago on the obstacles placed by the Egyptian authorities to block the way of rebuilding St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Assiut.
GOD but you can put your will in reality. After more than a year and a half of conflict and within 6 months the Coptic Church of San Marcos has been completely rebuilt.
There is now a simple church but great cathedral with 3 floors, each of them has three churches, a large center and two small separated on each side of the central altar churches.
In addition, two other churches were built inside the new building. Therefore, the Cathedral of San Marcos could be considered as one of the five largest churches in Egypt. The reconstruction cost about $ 5 million in a matter of almost 6 months.
The Metropolitan Mikhaeil funded the work with the accumulation of donated Copts in recent years. The cathedral was reopened for prayers earlier this year. This is a substantive requirement for what is coming.
At midnight on August 17, while hundreds of thousands of Copts in Egypt were celebrating Lent of St. Mary in the monastery of Santa Maria 3 miles south of the city of Assiut, people both Copts and Muslims, living in the Once a poor area of the city around the Cathedral of San Marcos, saw the apparition of St. Mary above the dome and between the two towers of the church at 11:30 PM .
The appearance was interrupted three hours later and went from 4 am to 6 hours of continuous flashing lights of celestial and spiritual doves. During that period, thousands of people from across the city gathered. The news swept through the city.
Almost a month later on Friday September 15, I was there. The cathedral is located in the poorest section of the old city, the streets around town are narrow and the buildings are so close that the viewing angles are not wide enough. The only way to explore the site is the roof of the buildings. There, I was one of countless people all over Egypt. I parked about a half mile from the church. In about an hour I could find a place on a roof in front of the south side of the church building. From my place I could see the roof of the church with its two towers to the left and to the east of the dome on the right.
From my arrival at 2:00 a.m. to 6:10 a.m., I was in heaven.
The Church has 2 towers, each one is built on 3 levels, with a rectangular base, above which is the second level, with its 8-sided cross section, four of the eight sides is a gap, the other 4 are not. Of the eight corners of the eight parts, 8 columns make the third level of the tower. The 8 columns are topped by the dome of the tower above which is a cross.
These towers, especially in the south were a stage of a festival of lights and celestial doves flying for more than 4 hours. Something very surprising, very emotional, very impressive and millions of other "very".
Explosions of light coming from each of the 8 sides of the second level of the tower, one by one. Other flashes coming from the tower on the left and crossed the roof of the church to finish at the top of the church on the right and light the cross on it.
Something like a spot of light could be seen in the center of the cross on top of the tower as in a storm of flashes of light. The lights vary in intensity from light such as fluorescent lights to shine so intense they illuminate the surrounding buildings and the faces of the people.
This is repeated many times, such as flashes of light from the interior of the dome of the tower passing between 8 columns. From inside the light appear as pigeons which are then separated as sparks to make a short flight away and then disappear.
As for Pigeons, I could see them in many ways, a flock of doves 2, 3, 7, 8, 12 or more pigeons flying above the church, between the towers, or between the towers and the dome, between the Church and the nearby Church of San Abadeer or above the people. Flying at different levels, either high or low, not flap their wings. Most surprising is that every pigeon chest is like a light bulb. Flying for a while, then disappear within my field. Some saw a dove like a duck flying above the Church, but I did not see this pigeon.
The Flight of the Doves continued bursts of light for a few hours and then just followed the lights for the rest of the night until dawn.
Browsing around the church you can find thousands of people over hundreds of roofs or hung hundreds of windows, in prayer, singing hymns, clapping. All houses are open to visitors. Residents live in a continuous festival, the word "sleep" is unknown throughout the area from the 17th of August. No accident was reported.

OFFICIAL REACTIONS AND RESEARCH
Security officials soon arrived in the area led by senior officials and tried to evacuate alleging that they were nothing more than hallucinations.
They did so in the following nights and evacuated the area from 10 pm to 6 hours each night, but the lights of heaven were stronger than his will to deny it. A few days later, Santa Maria turned back.
The shadow of a monk of St. Mary also appeared, no one could explain who was the monk. No reports of new occurrences of Santa Maria were given. However, the lights, and incense pigeons never ceased to appear every night from 2 am to 6 am.
Initially it was thought that the phenomenon was some kind of trick with a laser or light, so that the local government also ordered hours cut electricity to the entire neighborhood, in order to discover any deception. The light was not affected.
Andrea Xandry, a Swiss teacher and church consultant who traveled to Egypt to investigate the phenomenon, believes angelic apparitions may be the most likely explanation. "In the New Testament," he says, "important Christian events such as the birth of Jesus, temptation, passion and resurrection are connected with light phenomena (and angels)"
Xandry asked a physician and chemist whether healing had occurred, and was told that they had a significantly lower number of customers since the phenomena began, and his colleagues report the same.
STATEMENTS COPTS
The local town of Coptic Christian Synod has released a statement Sunday saying that civilians were reported to have been "spiritual facts" on several occasions and at different times since 17 August. The statement did not say whether the religious leaders have personally confirmed any sightings.
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III and His Grace the Metropolitan Anba Michael Assiut declare that the Coptic Orthodox Church today is following the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and other spiritual phenomena in the Church of San Marcos, Assiut.
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III confirmed the validity of the reports of these occurrences. Pope Shenouda said that these appearances are a comforting message of heaven and a confirmation of the faith of the Copts, the sky is aware of his struggle and is pleased by his perseverance.
The secretary of the Council of Churches in Assiut told the BBC, the city had never experienced anything like it.
He said people slept in the streets around the church of San Marcos, where occurrences have happened, and by standing on rooftops to capture the appearance.
The secretary of the Council of Churches in Assiut, Father Hanna Mina, said that other people had seen a large white dove, light appearing and disappearing but said that the apparitions were different each time. Father Hanna said "This is a blessing for Muslims and Christians alike. It is a blessing to Egypt. " And that Our Lady chose to appear in the city of Assiut because she had traveled there during the exile of the Holy Family of the Palestinian Herod.
The priest said relations between Christians and Muslims were now very good and that the sighting had put happy people of both religions.
Father Labib the nearby Coptic Orthodox monastery Dronka, was excited by the sighting. "If you look for the source of light, can not find it. This is the light of heaven. "
WHY NOW? AND WHY THERE?
The keywords for the answer to this quest are:
The 3rd millennium, San Marcos and Assiut.
+ On the eve of the 3rd millennium is very important to remind the world that the Holy Family had a residence time in Egypt. Heaven in his own way all celebrated as we did in different ways.
+ San Marcos was the apostle who brought Christianity to Egypt.
+ Assiut is the point south that the Holy Family arrived in Egypt. At the same time the city is known worldwide for giving birth to Islamic fundamentalism. There the breath of heaven is very necessary. This Church is a living example of the suffering of the Copts in Egypt to build or renovate their churches.
So God chose to glorify his name to the city that suffered Islamic terrorism for over 25 years, a church built after fierce sufferings due to the authorities. The Church is called as the apostle who preached Christianity in Egypt. The apparitions took place on the occasion of celebrating the millennium and remind us that God still remembers his people.
Some may think that is a manifestation of satan. Yes, you can take a aatanás like an angel of light form, but could the light la Cruz in an Islamic country as in Assiut?
He likes to hear people attributing this to light UFO hidden lasers, etc. (or even himself, Satan), and is very jealous of the wide spiritual revival that is taking place in Assiut.
If an appearance points to God calls people to Him, exalts and strengthens our faith in Him, you can not be Satan because in this case is against the wishes of Satan and his goals.
