The Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a church of Palms , located in the city center, in front of the homonymous square. The building, falling in the territory of the parish of St. Nicholas , is among the assets of the bound region of Calabria by Ministerial Decree 363 of 12 November 2009 [1] . The church, also known simply as the Church of the Carmine, it houses the miraculous eighteenth century statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel . Attached to the place of worship there is a monastery of the ' Carmelite order and the headquarters of the Congregation of Mary Noble SS.ma of Carmel .
History
Around 1540 , it was built by the provincial master Emiliano Angiolo a narrow convent of Carmelite while another small monastery called "St. Francis of Assisi", was built near the town at St. Mary of the fowler.
The church outside the city walls and dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto , is quoted in the former limina visit to Palmi of Msgr. Marcantonio Del Tufo, bishop of the Diocese of Miletus , in 1586 , as the same was able to list all the places of worship and congregations present at that historic moment in the city. The church, with Bishop Bull of 9 June 1609 , was granted to the Carmelite Order.
On 21 April 1652 , with the reform of Pope Innocent X Pope were suppressed in Palmi the convents of Carmelites of St. Francis and of ' Annunziata . After the small convent of the Carmine was suppressed, the pension of 110 ducats that he obtained it was assigned by the Diocese of Miletus to a chaplain, with the obligation to celebrate a Mass daily, except for one day each week, and also to assist the parish priest of St. Nicholas and pay 60 ducats per year to a hospital to be established in the future, but left the agency to give the hospital chaplain of the convent houses.
The Carmelites took over the secular priests who, with the collaboration of the faithful, established the Confraternity of "Our Lady of Mount Carmel", circa 1689 . In this ancient church, the smaller the current, in a frame above the altar, was placed the image on canvas, oil (now housed in the premises of the convent), the Madonna del Carmine in the act of handing the scapular to St. Simon Stock [5] . The church is mentioned in the deposition of the archpriest of the parish of St. Nicholas of 1740 , for the elevation of the Mother Church in Collegiate, as the same relates that in addition to the three parish churches there were, inside and outside the precincts of the city , other churches maintained and serviced with all decency and properties, including the Church of the Carmine inside the fence.
On 2 June 1777 , King Ferdinand IV , gave the royal assent to the "Noble Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel" even if the same had already been re-created in 1737 by the Reverend priest Don Antonio Attanà (with Governor master Gaetano Larocca).
The ancient church, built in the XVI century and repaired after the injuries suffered by the earthquake of 1638 , fell into ruin with the earthquake of 1783 . After this event, the congregation set about rebuilding it and completed the work rustic, beautified and furnished it for the worship of benches for the many brethren. The precious stucco dell'abdise, the work of the Calabrian Francesco Morani of Polistena , did not suffer any damage. The temple dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, destroyed several times by earthquakes, it was always the first to be rebuilt [10] . In fact, 27 January 1895 , the Congregation of the Carmelite decided that the jobs at once ceased, and the church was reopened for worship.
Still in the earthquake of 1908 the church underwent serious damage, but the Congregation of the Carmelite provident immediately repairs and reconstructions, since a few years ago he was planning to sell the church property and to the Carmelite Fathers. Indeed it is of 17 May 1905 the resolution in which the congregation asked the bishop of the Diocese of Miletus the return of the Carmelite Fathers. Negotiations last long due to the earthquake, the First World War and the advent of the Fascist regime . The Carmelite Fathers of Puglia , after an absence of nearly three centuries, on 1 July 1927 and took possession of the Sanctuary Oct. 6 was canonically erected the Carmelite Third Order.
Soon there were hardships. The church, partly rebuilt after 1908 , had yet to be completed and the facade of the same had to be rebuilt to make it safer and presentable. A design engineer. Father Carmelo Angiolini, then modified in part by Ing. Cav. Vittorio Storchi, six side altars were made. The decorations, designed by the architect. Nino Bagalà were all in gold leaf, while the choir was built of reinforced concrete columns and on bussolone of the church.
On 16 November 1944 , on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Miracle of the Madonna del Carmine in Palmi , the church was consecrated.
After the war was built wing of the monastery that overlooks the sea, the eastern part of the convent with an upper floor (designed by the architect. Dominic Sons) and a kindergarten "Madonna del Carmine". Also externally, in the square Carmine, was placed a bronze statue of the Madonna del Carmine, two lions also in bronze and finally was given final settlement from the remains of the ancient column Tauriana.

Obelisk to the Madonna del Carmine
The inauguration of the obelisk took place on May 8, 1983 , coinciding with the second anniversary of the earthquake of 1783 . The obelisk is made from a high pillar of granite , on top of which there is placed a bronze statue of the Madonna del Carmine . The work was realized by the company Attilio De Luca di Napoli and the stele was squared by local art teachers, led by Antonio Romeo

The festival is celebrated annually on November 16 to commemorate the miracle performed by the statue of the Virgin, from 31 October to 16 November 1894 , when it did the earthquake . The celebrations begin on October 30, when the statue is brought to the center of the church for veneration by the faithful. On 31 October instead starts a "sedicina" means any period of prayer that replaces the more traditional " novena . "
The route of the procession of 16 November
On the evening of November 16, every statue of the Madonna del Carmine is again brought in procession , at the same time and for the same streets that ran in November 16th 1894 .
Upon arrival of the procession at the end of the course Giuseppe Garibaldi, at the same place where you found the evening of November 16, 1894, occurred when the first shock of the earthquake, the bearers of the statue making a "reenactment", carrying running for a few hundred meters the Varetta with the statue, in memory of what made the bearers of that time, as a result of the fear that they had when they felt the first tremors of an earthquake. At the end of the race, you can stop and a short homily by the archdeacon of the Co-Cathedral city, prior to the return of the procession to the sanctuary .

The festival begins on July 16 with the novena , celebrated from July 7 every day in ' sanctuary of the same name . Immediately after the first Mass of the novena, the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is dropped from the niche in which it is placed during the year, to be exhibited at the center of the church for the veneration of the faithful.
On July 16, the anniversary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the feast begins in the morning with the celebration, in the sanctuary , the Holy Mass at any time and at 12.00 o'clock, is recited the "prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel."
In addition, the facade of the church, in the days of the festival, is decorated with lights and Piazza del Carmine, there is a small fair with stalls [13] .
In the late afternoon, immediately after the celebration of the Eucharist in the church, there is the traditional procession of the statue to the city streets . The statue is placed on a "Varetta" in wood , adorned with flowers , and carried on shoulders in procession by 18 carriers called in local parlance "mbuttaturi." In recent decades, and up to 2009 , in many circumstances was carried in procession a copy of the eighteenth-century miraculous statue of the Madonna del Carmine , in order to preserve the latter given its historical value and faith.
The historic route of the procession was articulated along the main streets of the city center, with a detour to the upper part of the city to reach the area where is located the ' civil hospital "Francis Pentimalli" . Over the past two years, the procession made of different paths.
Usually the party is ended by a fireworks display made by way of the Tracciolino road on the slopes of Mount St. Elias
