Commemorated on First Sunday The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On a stormy night in the 1200s, a king was separated from his escort and lost in a deserted spot. Suddenly a lightning bolt revealed a statue of the Virgin in a niche in the rock. The king vowed that if he escaped, he would return there to build a chapel, and so it was that the Valentine Chapel is clinging to this remote hill in central France, in the territory of the feudal domain of Valentines. Completely rebuilt in 1854, for centuries it housed the ancient walnut statue, moved to St. Martial parish church in Ségur for safekeeping; a copy remains in the chapel, sometimes spending a week in parishioners' homes. Our Lady of Valentine is invoked to revitalize frail children.
