Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Río Blanco y Paypaya de Jujuy, Argentina
Commemorated on October 31
History
The most beautiful devotion is the procession which takes place on October 31, the day on which the image is removed from its precious altar next to the nave of the Cathedral of Jujuy, and is taken to the Sanctuary of the White River ...
During the month of October Jujuy all Marian feast celebrates the most provincial call. jujeño The people displaying his deep religious faith, expressed his great devotion to the Virgin "Our Lady of the Rosary of White River and Paypaya", dating back to the colonial era of the mid-seventeenth century.
Entering through the side entrance of the court, located next to the church of the Cathedral of San Salvador de Jujuy, in the center of the long nave, is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary of White River and Paypaya, a clothed image 60 cm. height. Another image is in the chapel of the city of Rio Blanco.
HISTORY OF WORSHIP
In the beautiful valley Palpalá (Jujuy), Spanish landowners Indians and black slaves employed for tillage land. Eventually they realized that it was necessary to teach the Christian faith, to make them more docile and submit with resignation to work.
In 1611, Luis de Quiñones took power Tucumán government and resolved to provide for the spiritual needs of the Indians who inhabited that region, Ocloyas, Osas and Paypayas.
The first "encomenderos" of the latter was Don Alonso de Tapia, who ordered the construction of a chapel for them in the Valley of Palpalá, since Francisco de Córdoba, of the Society of Jesus, Father and catechizing coming for some time. They formed, then the population of San Francisco de Paypaya.
In 1659 the Paypayas, Osas and Ocloyas suffered from a terrible epidemic. The Vicar of Jujuy, which at that time was Don Pedro Ortiz de Zárate, attended the Paypayas for ten years and helped them rebuild their chapel destroyed by fire.
The tribe of these Indians was slowly disappearing, and at the end of the seventeenth century had been reduced to 15 members, according to documents of the time. "The large-scale massacres executed Chaco barbarians against these peaceful neophytes, surprising in their shacks as a scourge of extermination, it seems that ran with the rest of these tribes."
Unfortunately, existing documents about the history of the image of the Virgen del Rosario and the White River and its sanctuary Paypaya are scarce, not being possible to determine when and where it first appeared. In statement signed in 1669 is found in a relationship of property on the chapel paypayas there was no picture.
It is said that by 1714 the image was transferred to White River, Nearest and fertile valleys allocated for growing population. The minutes of the transfer and a bell with an inscription "SOY DE NTRA. SRA. ROSARY PAIPAYA - 1696 "are in the Mother Church.
THE MIRACULOUS POWERS OF OUR LADY
The story of the Virgin joins the legends of early American colonization and the conquest was made difficult by the diversity of unruly tribes inhabiting the valleys and mountains and Blessed Mother contributed effectively to pacify those tribes among which counted the Paypayas. Nomads by nature whose origin has not been proven yet, but documents in the archives of the Province, it is known that inhabited the banks of the River Corral Piedras between Tilquiza and Ocloyas region conducive to these wandering peoples who lived by hunting and fishing.
One day, raising their camps and tracing the Long costs, fell by Cucho and Amancay and were to be established at the confluence of the Arroyo Seco (the White), and Rio Grande Anastoro and formed a population as seen in the archaeological remains and had to be important.
This village threatened the city of Jujuy many times but every time they wanted to carry out their plans, they appeared on a "will pacará" Lady of the Rosary, wearing his splendid dress pink, light blue cloak and wielding his cane sovereign . So several times Paypaya tribe sought but raze this town presentárseles that lady again, preventing the passage.
The image of the Virgen del Rosario set up his throne Queen, Lady and redeeming of that town. After this, the Jesuits were able to take the civilizing conquest of other tribes: Osas, Ojotas, Ocloyas, Toba, Mocovíes (from Paraguay), Omaguacas, Purmamarcas until Calchaquies and other races more besieging the people of Jujuy.
That's as it has, that faith penetrated their hearts, surrendered their weapons and facilitated evangelical missionaries conquest.
It is known that the Spanish and natives of that region miraculous powers attributed to the Virgen del Rosario, who appeared during the fierce attacks of the Chaco Indians, the Toba powerful. Wrapped in his dazzling robe, surrounded by a supernatural light image of the Virgin did, more than once, that the fierce attackers retrocediesen, saving the faithful.
His image appeared "first in the rustic huts paypayas, then in the chapel of Ortiz de Zárate, to have, after 1833, the present chapel."
Horacio Carrillo tells us: "the image wrapped in blue forest in blue top and white paypayas He appeared (as" paypayas "vernacular means, by a strange coincidence," white "). It was what certainly providential advance of the birth of the flag of Argentina, here it arose, was blessed and swore, with the pure white of virginity and the magnificent blue of tarcos in bloom, as the proper mantle of the Immaculate "
"The Virgin of the White River miraculously appeared to defend the nascent population of this city from the disastrous incursions of wild Chaco; reminding including evidence of the miracle, the tunic image curd arrowheads and huagrillas, adhered during the voyage by the path that brought immediately to the Indians that, in a tiny wand and shining lady, fled in terror to their sheepfolds field. "
"This is complemented by another miracle of the Virgin who moved to the city, which was abundant tears from her eyes was evolved during the entire time he was out of his chapel, which reappeared without knowing how, and that the same pain tests were repeated during a second translation followed by a new leak and subsequent reappearance here at Río Blanco miracles. "
Meanwhile Bishop Germán Mallagray reveals some related Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Rio Blanco and Paypaya background.
"Unfortunately there is little that can be contributed to the origin of the image because there is no accurate data and tradition tells us very little, everything is based on more or less successful but unproven conjectures. The first of the talk is about the appearance: arising under the shade of a flaky pacará on the board of the Rio Grande with Xibi-Xibi (although no documents proving this). "
"Another tradition speaks of the appearance of the Virgin to the indigenous people who tried to destroy the city especially at a time when the uprising was taking terrible calchaquí features. The Indians of all regions coalesce to throw the Spanish invader. In Jujuy, Viltipoco commands the forces that make it appear as some historians ten thousand Indians. Anyway, Argañarás, with a stroke of his hand and with a handful of men, it leads to Purmamarca covered in the shadows of the night. There he meets his drunken Indians sleeping difficult and does not take over the leader, which ends the survey at least in what concerns to Jujuy. The Indians disband and San Salvador recently founded, is saved. From this data the tradition asserts that the Virgin had appeared to commanding Indians withdraw from the city, threatening him with his cane. This is what the Indians said. Very beautiful but oft-repeated tradition. No doubt the miracle but no any supporting documentation to prove it. "
CONTROVERSY OVER THE IMAGE OF THE VIRGIN
As the conclusion to this title is linked to the Cathedral of San Salvador de Jujuy and the chapel located in White River (town situated 7 km. Said capital), and each of these sites is a picture of the Virgin, generated the need to resolve which of the two was the first.
In the Church, Official Publication of the Diocese of Jujuy, No. 43 October 1980 publication, self-pastoral of Bishop Padilla, Bishop of Salta and Tucuman Apostolic Administrator, which in 1898 has found that "the Cure Rector of this matrix (referring to the Cathedral of Jujuy) release information, led by our Worship this, with statements from witnesses oaths, which will cover the following points: 1 - From the Sanctuary and the Image of the Virgin SS that he worships;? 2nd - Which of the two images, which under the same invocation there are, is primitive and which the faithful time ago taxed worship as Patron, attributing thank you reached ... "(p. . 16).
The outcome of the investigations indicated that the first image is the one at present is in the Cathedral as it is received by the Pontifical Corona. However both receive the honors of his devotees.
The latter is located in the central niche of the altarpiece. 's an image ready to be dressed, although her body has carved briefly in the torso, and the bottom complete with glued fabric arranged in tight parallel vertical folds.
That part, by the arrangement of said folds, and the nimbus cloud with winged cherubs heads emerging from one of the horns of the crescent moon appears above the trunk and head. There are matching also items that characterize the Immaculate Conception with gestures that assumes: extended arm to hold the Divine Infant, and they closed right hand to hold an attribute belonging to different invocations of the Virgin and Child.
But it is necessary to note that modern polychrome and added false eyelashes today, so distorted version of the piece, that any analysis can only arrive at tentative conclusions.
Mary and baby are lined with modern clothes, and wear crowns of embossed and engraved silver with colored stones, from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Ahead is placed the crescent of hammered silver and burilada, which reads: Rev.. S. Valdez and wife Ms N. Del Rrio. Year 1928. (Sic)
DEVOTION
The P. Germain, in No. 38 of the magazine "Green Scream" reflects the following: "October is the month of spiritual rebirth of Jujuy. October is the month of pilgrimage, the Fiesta, faith, religious and Christian heart of Jujuy. No self-respecting jujeño may dispense with devotion to Mary of the Rosary because it makes the deepest sense of our identity. Many times I have heard of Jujuy lips: "I am well Jujuy, Father and from tiny'm White River." And it's true. Thousands who could repeat that phrase. "
Devotion to the Virgen del Rosario endures the passage of time, more and more increasing number of those who on the day dedicated to it will provide all sorts of tributes. One of them, perhaps the most beautiful, is the procession which takes place on October 31. On that day the image is removed from its precious altar located in the form of side chapel next to the main nave of the Cathedral Church of Jujuy, being carried to the sanctuary of the White River, which is home to his old home.
Thousands of faithful from all parts, in the accompanying religious pilgrimage. They walk miles in their bare majority as tradition dictates. Very early the procession from the Cathedral, with the shadows of night still wrapping devotees light the way with their candles, offering more beauty to this show of Christian faith. Along the way they arise "misachicos" that increase the number of passengers.
Lead other covers pictures of flowers and singing hymns of praise to the Virgin. generally are accompanied by their own musicians who wear clothes in bright colors and use traditional instruments such as reed flutes, the "pinkullos" and "anatas". Occasionally a 'erke "blow hard, throws his bass sound on the voices of countless singers, and the sound of drums and boxes rumbles at dawn to be.
Holiday Lights are the procession near the small shrine of the White River, the end of the hike. The Virgin is received with great demonstrations of joy translated into artificial and sound given by those waiting at the beautiful valley fires. From Humahuaca ravine fall thousands of pilgrims who come to pay homage to the Virgin Salvadora.
