Santuario della Madonna dell'Abbondanza
(Cursi, Italy)
The Shrine of Our Lady of Abundance, located outside the village, stands on the site of a small votive chapel of the sixteenth century dedicated to Santa Maria del Melito, the ancient name of the area. It was built around the middle of the seventeenth century as a result of a miraculous event tied to a long period of drought that swept through the territory of Cursi. It was partially rebuilt after 1708 , when it was partially destroyed due to a fire caused by lightning [8] . The building has a plan of a Greek cross , surmounted by a dome with drum octagonal. Are visible in the drum painted images of the four Evangelists alternating with large vertical windows. The interior is decorated with elaborate eighteenth-century stucco and paintings by Franco Verri, enclosed in large and oval medallions depicting moments in the life of the Virgin, replacing the original stolen the painter Lecce Oronzo Tiso . The altar, built in 1650 in marble and stucco by Giovanni Donato Chiarello Cupertino, holds a fifteenth-century fresco of the Virgin and Child.
