Virgen del Verdún, Minas, Lavalleja, Uruguay The 10' statue of the Virgin of the Verdun, illuminated nightly, stands on a 62' pedestal on 1100' Verdun Hill overlooking the town of Minas in southeastern Uruguay. History

High in the mountains of Lavalleja is the National Shrine of Our Lady of Verdun (4 km from the center of Minas is the capital).
In 1901 the foundation stone of the monument to the Virgin of Verdun sets, the Immaculate, on the hill. The following year Pope Leo XIII granted plenary indulgence to pilgrims.

HISTORY OF THE VIRGIN OF VERDUN
The priest Don Giuseppe De Luca was parish priest of Mines from November 1891 until April 1906. STATUE AND CURRENT TEMPLETE
In 1906, Bishop instructed the Architect D. Soler Cayetano Bringas draft Monument to the Virgin at the top of Verdun. He designed three large pilasters representing the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity. They were topped by angels with symbols of the virtues.
The whole formed a pyramid with a triangular base, a symbol of prayer that ascends and over globe five meters, held by three angels whose wings open measuring seven meters and the statue of the Immaculate nine meters high. Total height of monument: 45 meters.
The year after the death of Bishop Soler, on June 4, 1907 the cornerstone of the current monument was placed, with their sponsors Hermogenes Sosa and Miss Inchauste, for the city of Minas, and the famous sculptor and writer Don Juan Zorrilla de San Martín and María del Carmen, the city of Montevideo.

CELEBRATIONS
