Legend has it that one night, during the siege of the city of Seville , King Ferdinand III of Castile, being in the camp, he fell to the Virgen de los Reyes to ask for help. Since then when the Virgin called his name and said: "You have a constant protective my old image, which you want long and is in Seville", promising victory. Then an angel made him enter the city until you reach the main mosque into which he was shown the hidden wall, which turned transparent as glass, and Ferdinand III was able to see the image of the Virgin as had been painted centuries ago.

The same angel directed him to return to the camp, where he arrived without suspicion and unharmed.
A few days after the surrender of the city, Fernando III of Castile took Seville on 23 November 1248 , on the Feast of San Clemente. So he founded the first monastery was one with this name, since it maintains that the Cistercian order. This event coincided with the birthday of Prince D. Alfonso (future Alfonso X the Wise ).
